There are thirteen skills available in Bellwright. Of these thirteen skills, two skills "Labourer" and "Researcher" are exclusive to NPCs and as such are strictly unavailable to the player.

Role of Skills[]

Skills determine what you can and cannot do, and by extension determines what the NPC's you recruit can and cannot do in your settlement. Resources, equipment and crafting all have required skill levels to be able to perform the action and if the skill is not at the necessary value, well your settlement recruits will be wandering aimlessly. For example the most basic bow in the game requires an Archery skill of "1" as well as an Agility of "1". You also need a quiver and arrows. If you neglect any of these 4 requirements you and your settlers will be unable to do things. If you lack either skill the villager will simply store the bow in the nearest bin.

Skills also provide buffs that improve your viability in combat. In fact most of your improvement in game comes from leveling skills up, the armor and equipment isn't as particularly strong as the associated skill buffs.

Skills[]

Skills cap out at a max level of 10. NPC Companions have hard caps that they cannot exceed. Some NPCs may not be able to go up to level 10 in a skill. Generally, a higher tier NPC such as those marked as "Apprentice (Profession)" have a higher skill cap. They also tend to start off with a higher base skill total. You cannot train a skill past a set cap. You will not be able to train a NPC to level 8 crafting if their skill caps at 7.

Leveling Up[]

The player's and NPC's skills can be leveled up by doing the related activities. For example plant crops to level up farming, cook raw food at cooking stations to level up cooking and so on. Additionally, the player can find skill books as loot from enemies, treasure stashes, quest rewards or can be bought from book traders in towns.

Only one book can be used at a time. Each book has a half-hour cooldown. As a result they are not ideal for power-leveling.
